Dedicated To My Soul Sisters. Thank You!
This poem’s for you
My 2am friend
My keeper of secrets
My support with no end
I first met you at school
Too scared, two alone
You lent me a pencil
We took the same bus back home
We first spoke at ballet
Neither of us made the cut
But we giggled and wiggled
At my pink tutu clad butt
Then we were teens
We were ugly and afraid
Talking of spots
And the day we’d get laid
We had crushes together
We liked the same guy
Swapped notes in the classroom
Rang just to say hi
Through uni and travels
At work or away
We made time for each other
There was no other way
We had nights out together
Getting ready took hours
In the days before Facebook
When mistakes were just ours
You’ve seen me at perfect
You’ve seen me at bad
You’ve seen me at drunken
You’ve seen me at mad
You’ve listened and held me
You’ve agreed he’s a prat
Then celebrated each time
I took the prat back
Days, weeks and months passed
But it didn’t change a thing
Each time, re-connected
We’d know where to begin
And now that we’re grown ups
Going by the name of Mum
You’re still my chosen sister
My number one chum
You’ve told me no half truths
You’ve stood by me whatever
You’ve been my rock and my cushion
We’ll be soul mates forever
So thank you dear matey
My buddy, my pal
My emergency go to
My number one gal
I have a full life
My busy lot never ends
But there’s nothing worth having
Without 2am friends
