I Know Who You Are by Alice Feeney Review
Dark, Disturbing and Deeply Addictive
Alice Feeney smashed into my bookshelf a few summers ago, when we were travelling through Europe in a Campervan and chose to listen to her debut “Sometimes I Lie” on audible. To say we were quickly addicted to her writing would be an understatement. So much so, that when we sneakily tried to continue to listen at bedtime, our eldest daughter got very annoyed with us for ‘cheating’. She was hooked too.
When it was announced that Alice was bringing another book out, I immediately pre-ordered; in paperback, kindle, and audible versions… you know… just in case.
It’s rare for me to find an author that I get so excited about that I pre-order at all, even more unheard of for me to pre-order all three.
Feeney’s writing is hypnotic, her ability to draw you in from the very first chapter is a skill, but to keep such an intense storyline going without losing pace is exceptional.
I Know Who You Are is not a book for the faint-hearted. There were times when I winced, moments when I peeked through my fingers, scared to read the next line (even when I knew what was coming) and many times when my breath was drawn unintentionally from my chest. It’s a story about lies, mistruths, and fear. A fear so pure that you would build a whole new life for yourself just to escape the pain of the past. But what happens when that past catches up with you?
It’s not so much about fame and how it makes you hide your true self, but more about someone who has chosen fame as a device to hide away. It’s an unlikely career for someone who seems unable to deal with the pressures of the paparazzi and prodding questions from journalists but the perfect device to keep her secrets hidden from everyone around her. After all, they do say, to truly hide, hide in plain sight.
Alice is a master of trickery, a true genius when it comes to plot and pace, and more than anything, a true goddess when it comes to twisting a tale in a way you won’t expect.
Follow up novels can go one of two ways, you can either be utterly disappointed after a remarkable debut, or you can find yourself obsessing over a new favourite author. For me, I Know Who You Are most certainly puts Alice Feeney in the second camp.
I am already scouring the news sites and waiting eagerly to hear of her next release because, with this one, she has truly set the bar sky high, and I can’t wait to see what darkness she brings to life next.
An easy five stars – and quite possibly one to enter straight into my Top Ten Books of 2019!
